Empowering Local Communities for Wildlife Conservation

Under the Kenya Wildlife Management and Conservation Act of 2013, local communities are granted the right to conserve wildlife on their land as a means of generating income. While this practice has flourished in many parts of Kenya, the northeastern region has yet to fully embrace this opportunity. Our organization is committed to changing this by empowering communities in this area to establish and manage new conservation efforts.
Expanding Conservation Efforts in Northeastern Kenya

We aim to lead the northeastern communities in the establishment of at least 18 new conservation areas. These areas will be strategically distributed across regions with significant wildlife populations, ensuring that both the land and its inhabitants benefit from sustainable management practices. Our goal is to help these communities unlock the potential of wildlife conservation as a viable source of income and development.
Protecting 5,000,000 Acres of Vital Habitat

The new conservation areas will be spread across Wajir, Mandera, and Garissa counties, with 8 areas in Wajir, 4 in Mandera, and 6 in Garissa. Altogether, these conservation zones will cover approximately 5,000,000 acres (20,234 square kilometers) of vital wildlife habitat. Through this initiative, we are not only safeguarding the region’s biodiversity but also creating opportunities for economic growth and community empowerment.
